Dans leur introduction au recueil Anthropology of Landscape (1995), Hirsch et O'Halon tentent de donner une assise au concept théorique qu’est le paysage. " What is being defined as landscape here is the relationship seen to exist between these [Voir plus bas.] two poles of experience in any cultural context. " (Hirsch 1995 : 5) La conception du paysage de Hirsch et O'Halon ne me paraît pas dépasser le jeu de prestidigitation structuraliste des oppositions binaires dont eux-mêmes dressent une liste provisoire et non-exhaustive :
